Summer Camps Create Active Campus

Leesburg, Fla. - The Months of June and July are always busy for the Lakehawk Athletics programs. All three sports have been extremely active with their summer camps up and running week in and week out.

Baseball held their yearly kids camp during two weeks in June. Kids ages 7-12 swarmed the Lake-Sumter Leesburg campus to learn the basics of the game of baseball. "It's incredibly important to teach our youth the skills necessary to build a solid foundation in baseball," said Head Baseball Coach, Rich Billings. "Its settings like this where ball players grow their talent and love for the game with a fun and informative environment." The youth baseball camps brought in close to 100 kids this year.

For the last three years, the final week of June means softball camp on the Leesburg campus. The Lakehawks softball program hosts a three day camp for high school aged players looking to hone their skills as they compete on the elite travel ball circuit for college scholarships. Since Coach Jay Miller and his staff took over in 2015, more than 15 former campers have signed to play softball and Lake-Sumter. This year the camp boasted 38 participants.

Volleyball skills camps are operating for the first time this summer each Friday. Head Coach Amanda Phelps along with assistant coach, Nate Camnitz have been hosting camps working toward improving skills such as Passing, serving and hitting. Athlete ages 10-18 will be on the court every Friday throughout mid-June and into July.

"These camps are extremely important for several reasons, the most important being to show off our beautiful campus and our amazing coaching staffs," said Coach Miller. "When we are able to bring in between 150-200 different players, parents and friends and show them an amazing experience, they go out and spread the word about Lake-Sumter Athletics. Those are future students and student-athletes on our campus."
